Chapter 6.

COREY.

Erik showed me around the town and introduced me to so many people. Lovely people, whose smiling faces caught my heart. Who showed no sign of the decay the rest of the world was feeling.

The only relatives who seemed to be directly linked to Erik were his brother and sister, their parents having died years ago.

Everyone in the pack had a job, a concept I’d believed had died off with the humans. Whether it was maintaining the land they farmed, or the houses they lived in, or the clothes they wore, all contributed in some way. Even minding the children who were thriving, or cooking the meals for the whole pack.

They all had a purpose, and they all did it well. Or seemed to.

The way the pack functioned as a tight unit made me cling to Erik even more. I wanted to stay here and be a part of this world. I wanted to forget the decade of hunger. Of fighting. Of death.

But every moment I felt safe in the presence of the big Alpha in this town that time forgot, a tingle of fear would still course up my spine.

Would my old world find me and destroy all my new dreams?

I was sure of it.

I’d been given a job with Sienna, Erik’s sister, who I loved. She was a beautiful woman, who treated me well, and loved her brother fiercely. Being around her was like basking in the sun’s rays on a perfect day.

“I’m finished with these alterations, Corey. If you could take them over to Mrs Phelps for me?” Sienna said one morning as she handed me a pile of clothes. They all appeared to be long dresses and skirts.

I searched my memory. Mrs. Phelps... Mrs. Phelps...

“Yeah. Sure. Ah, she’s the old lady with the red hair in the house near the hall?”

Sienna laughed. “Yeah, that’s her. I’m glad you’re getting to know everyone in the pack. Most of them are extremely nice. Anyone given you any trouble?”

I shuffled to the front door and managed to juggle the bundled clothing in my arms and turn the handle.

“No, everyone’s been great so far.”

Except your brother. James is an absolute prick.

“See you in a minute, Sienna.”

I waved at the Alpha’s sister and made my way outside, the sun on my face and the smell of freshly baked bread in the air.

What a life I had now. If I had died and this was my Heaven, then I was grateful.

I made my way through town, taking careful steps to protect my responsibility.

“Hi, Corey!” One of the young children called out, waving frantically at me as he hung from an open window.

“Hi!” I called back, loving the feeling of community and warmth in the town I’d stumbled upon.

Erik had been so supportive and patient with me over the past few weeks. My learning curve in this new environment was steep. He was so attentive, so eager to please. Especially with food.

Erik was off hunting again today. The whole town thought it was because of me.
